Ignite Africa Readers 'R' Leaders Destiny Walk 2015

The 2015 Ignite Africa Readers ‘R’ Leaders Destiny Walk held on Saturday 19th September, 2015 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. The annual walk focuses on creating awareness about the importance and positive attributes of a healthy reading culture among youths in Nigeria. Stemming from the dismal failure rates recorded in examination results in recent years, Ignite Africa conceived the idea to check the negative trend and build a positive and vibrant future for youths by exposing them to the importance of reading. Ignite Africa declares that education is the backbone in the development of any nation, and it is a fact that countries with an effective education system lead the world, both socially and economically. The key to development is good education system. Nigeria is one of the countries where education has constantly deteriorated. Hence, we walk to get the attention of education stakeholders, as we must tame the tide of educational degradation in Nigeria now. The walk featured celebrities such as, veteran actress Joke Silva, Actor Joseph Benjamin, Ace broadcaster Dr. Larry Izamoje, Music sensations, Sound Sultan, Sir Shina Peters, Ortz Wiliki, and mandators; veteran comedian Ali Baba; and the great comedians, who kept everyone laughing out loud, Seyi Law and Tee A. It was a day packed with activities for Ignite Africa; upon termination of the walk, the event continued indoors at the Indoor Sports Hall, with various activities. There were presentations of comedy skits about the difference reading makes, featuring Joseph Benjamin; musical entertainment by Sound Sultan and SSP. Alibaba delivered his message on igniting the passion for reading, clearly stating, “unless the mind of a child is inflammable you cannot ignite a passion for reading”, urging parents and teachers to help children learn to read early. The Convener, Kolawole Oyeyemi addressed the gathering, using his own story, with relevance to “With the power to read anyone can change their story”; while the Project Director, Winnie Aduayi updated participants on the extent of work Ignite Africa has done so far, and also officially presented the online Ignite Africa Library. There were lots of goodies given out to participants of the event: an iPhone 6, courtesy of Ringo, was presented to the Winner of the Ignite Africa Instagram BookSelfie Contest, Dherbie. Also, an iPad Mini, courtesy of Saphire Virtual Network, a galaxy tab 4, and an Apple iPod were given to lucky winners of the ‘Walk to Win’ Raffle Draw. Free MTN airtime were stuck under the chairs in the hall, for participants to find. The star-studded event was indeed fun filled and successful. Ignite Africa also gave out Free T-shirts, face caps, and refreshments to participants.
